Special Interest Groups
Have a passion for a particular type of embroidery? Then come along to a Group that shares your passion. Special Interest Groups are open to all Guild members.
The Beading Group meets on the 2nd Friday of the month from 10.30am to 2.30pm. Convenor:Eliza Bagley
The British Embroidery Group meets on the 5th Monday in the month at 10.30am. All Guild members welcome. Convenor: Gillian Smith
The Broderers Group is open to all members who enjoy fine needlework of any technique. Meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Convenor: Deidre Loorham
The Canvas Work Group meets every 4th Friday as they occur during the year.This Group enjoys all forms of embroidery on canvas and includes beginners as well as experienced canvas work stitchers. Convenor: Rita Evans
The Crewel Group has a monthly guidance day to stimulate a common interest in both traditional and contemporary use of crewel wools for embroidery.It is the use of these special woollen threads and the development of stitches and colour values that define crewel work. Meetings are on the 4th Thursday of the month. Convenor: Jennifer Alde
The Ethnic Embroidery Study Group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 10.00am to 2.30pm. The goals of this Group are to study pieces from the Guild's collection; to foster contact and friendship with members of the different ethnic groups in South Australia and to learn and document the stitches and motifs of their traditional embroideries; to contribute to the Guild Library a series of folders containing research and a bibliography of the topics studied; to share a common interest in ethnic embroidery and to foster and encourage individual research by Guild members. The Free Machine Embroidery Group meets on the 5th Thursday of the month. Convenor: Robyn Inverarity
The Hedebo Group meets on the 5th Sunday of the month.
The Japanese Embroidery Group meets at 9.30am on the 2nd Saturday of even months and the 4th Tuesday each month.This Group enjoys working with traditional techniques and designs to produce fine embroidery on silk using silk and metallic threads. Convenor: Patricia Le Plastrier
Our JEMS Group is for anyone aged 8 to 18 years, who has an interest in beginning embroidery or furthering their skills. Individuals work entirely at their own pace in the company of other young stitchers, with the support and guidance of tutors. Projects can be followed closely, or for those who are more competent other projects can be explored. Our aim is to have bright and useful projects which are achievable while learning the proper stitching techniques. We welcome you to join us for a session so that you can see the variety of projects that the students are working on.
The group meets from 1.00pm to 3.00pm on the1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, excluding the middle Saturday of school holidays. The Linen Lace Group will appeal to members who are interested in lace-like embroidery. This work is mainly done on woven and counted fabric. Examples of this work are Cutwork, Eyelet Work, Hardanger, Hedebo, Pulled Fabric Work, Drawn Thread Work and lace-making using a needle and thread.This Group meets on the 1st Tuesday of the month. Convenor: Soly Milics
The Metal Thread Group holds guidance days on the 2nd Friday of the month.Experienced members are in attendance and the emphasis is on the sharing of ideas and expertise.Occasional formal workshops are held to cater for any special interests of students.Beginners are encouraged and will be introduced to the technique. A starter kit of suitable materials is available at a small charge.Square frames are essential and may be purchased on attendance if necessary. Convenor: Jennifer Alde
The Needlelace & Stumpwork Group meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month.Members interested in lace made with a threaded needle will enjoy working pieces using techniques which include Limerick Lace, Filet, Halas, Youghal, Branscombe Point and some elements of stumpwork. Convenor: Anne Helmore
The No Limits Group meets on the 1st Thursday of the month. It is an enthusiastic Group for members interested in experimenting and creating with different techniques, materials and ideas. Convenor: Di Fisher
The Patchwork & Quilting Group is for members interested in the use of multiple fabrics pieced together in a multitude of patterns either by hand or machine stitching. Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Convenor: Gwen Deare
The Sampler & Cross Stitch Group encourages and assists members in the making of their own samplers by helping each other with references and exchange of ideas. Samplers are not necessarily done in cross stitch.Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month. Convenor:Margaret Baxter
The Sew Small Group meets on the 3rd Monday of the month. This is a Group of long standing which, like other SIGs, welcomes any Guild members and is keen to help with projects and share ideas. Convenor: Annie Schulz
